One day, I was at the airport coming back from a trip to Korea. We were in the customs line. There were several people in front of me, but the guy in charge said to the people in front of us, “Lets let the wheelchair go first.” Then he turned to me and said “Hey Wheelchair! You’re up!” I found this kind of funny but also sort of sad. I wanted to go up to him and say, “Excuse me, but I have a name. And it’s not ‘Wheelchair’”. Yes, I am in a wheelchair and I realize that but I bet no one would feel good if I called them “guy that can walk” or “chubby guy” or “dumb guy” or whatever. I know that the man that was there didn’t mean it to be rude, but this gives us all something to think about.
